Top colors of 2024

A colorful year chock full of significant pop culture moments, striking design innovation, and underlying societal trends, 2024 saw a wild range of hues emerge from our rainbow spectrum. From mellow tones to dramatic shades to the iconic brat green, the most popular colors of 2024 took us on a journey that spanned the whole color wheel

Peachy keen—Peach Fuzz, Pantone Color of the Year 2024

Introduced in late 2023, Peach Fuzz was declared the color of the year by Pantone. As always, Pantone’s researched color became a launching point for many collaborations that caused branching veins of influence throughout various industries. These included HGTV’s color of the year (persimmon), a collection of patterns with Spoonflower, and a limited edition film pack with Polaroid.

As a color that exudes comfort and self-care, the Peach Fuzz color of the year was naturally incorporated into beauty products, bakeries, fashion, and interiors.

Brat green and #bratgirlsummer

Created by design studio Special Offer Inc., Brat green took over as the color of the summer. Off-putting and rebellious, the lime green hue kicked off #bratsummer and spurred the brat phenomenon.

Starting as being unapologetically, authentically yourself—messy imperfections, chaotic flaws, and all—the bratosphere has expanded into a symbol of “womanhood, girl power, and self-confidence”.

The basic structure of the design includes a backsplash of hex code #8ACE00 with Arial Narrow font centered on top. Arial Narrow is a basic font that’s free to use commercially, which further solidifies the effect of inclusivity.

The brat brand took off and inspired many projects, including the Kamala Harris presidential campaign, Y2K fashion, and dance trends on TikTok. It also dovetailed with existing brands such as Prada, which has used a similar color prominently for over 20 years, and our very own Envato brand.

Going into 2025, the brat visual identity is a winner for future projects.

Nuanced politics—red, white, and blue

The classic red, white, and blue combo has been used throughout history to represent many themes, including peace, bravery, truth, water, and sky. It’s found on many national flags worldwide and has inspired patriotic projects in industries such as fashion, music, and events.

From straightforward patriotic symbols such as the Paris Olympics and the U.S. Election to nuanced culture-shifting songs, Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter album and Chappell Roan’s NPR Tiny Desk concert, red, white, and blue are compelling colors that immediately connect a project to a country.

The newest Olympic mascots are the Phryges: little red, white, and blue characters based on the Phrygian cap, a cap symbolizing freedom in French culture.

In the case of Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé took back these colors, shone a light on cowboy historical inaccuracies, and encouraged a cowboy renaissance of listening and engagement in country music.

Chappell Roan’s makeup for her NPR Tiny Desk concert consisted of a white base, red lipstick, and blue eyeshadow, emulating an 80s prom look mixed with drag, which has become a politicized subject.

Whether the use of red, white, and blue in a project is straightforward or nuanced, the effect is tied to the political landscape.

Movie duos—red, yellow, pink, and green

This color combination honors two of the top-grossing movies in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26, 2024) and Wicked (November 22, 2024). Both familiar stories, these colors create familiar combinations that represent the characters.

Deadpool wears red because it hides bloodstains, and Wolverine wears yellow because it draws his enemies’ attention away from bystanders and teammates. The color green is associated with Elphaba because of her skin color, and pink is associated with Glinda because she wears pink in many adaptations of Wicked.

From a marketing perspective, both color combinations were easy for collaborators to use to evoke the duo dynamic from the films. With Wicked’s gigantic $150 million marketing budget, collaborations included Starbucks, Hilton, and Arc de Triomphe.

Dark cherry red and the unexpected red theory

Starting in 2023 with a bright red and evolving in 2024 into dark cherry red, as dubbed by TikTok, this range of hues effortlessly went from spring to summer in fashion, hair, and interior design.

Brands such as Chanel, Rick Owens, and Gucci represent this already popular color on the catwalk, and celebrities such as Lily Collins, Jenna Ortega, and Chappell Roan have popularized it. This trend will most likely continue into 2025.

Trends such as Cherry Cola hair aim to differentiate the deep, nostalgic, Coca-Cola-inspired color from regular red, taking red hair further. The unexpected red theory, coined by designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon at the beginning of 2024, is that adding a red element to a space where it wouldn’t usually be found will elevate any area.

As an attention-grabbing color already, a red accent creates a more energized, balanced space and has been used in interior design in various rooms. 2025 will most likely see a continuation of the unexpected red theory in the form of the unexpected Merlot theory.

Chocolate brown to Mocha Mousse

In 2023, tan was the go-to color to decorate with and wear as a minimalist color that exudes comfort, stability, and luxury. The chocolate, mocha brown of the chic and luxurious in 2024 is a natural continuation of that tan.

Found in fall fashion lines and interior design trends, chocolate mocha brown is the darker, more moody version of the clean tan from before. In interior design, brown was the new neutral pick—a warmer, friendlier, more comforting color than neutrals in gray. As the latest pick for Pantone’s Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse will be sticking around in 2025 as the hue of sophistication and has already resulted in many brand collaborations.

Butter boards to birthday Dresses—butter yellow color

A competing hue with brat green and butter yellow shallowly lost the battle for color of the summer. However, it was still an influential color trend over the year, following a movement of butter-inspired products, food, fashion components, and movie influences.

The versatility of the color lends itself to different fabrics, such as silky gauze, knitwear, and tougher textures. A good example of its use is the Who Decides War “X” collection, which looks like it would fit into the Dune franchise.

Butter yellow also complemented Sabrina Carpenter’s range of pastels as her birthday dress in May. In interior design, the butter yellow color had its heyday in the form of product accents. Soothing candles, velvet golden seat cushions, and happy accent walls were all staples in 2024.

A continuation into 2025 is seen as literal butter rugs and clothing items, celebrating butter sticks’ lemon color and packaging. Closely related is the polarizing butter board trend that started in 2022 and is still strong today. Butter boards are butter spread onto charcuterie boards with tasty food additions. Whether butter yellow is found in fashion, interior design, or food, it’s a warm, calming color that can upgrade any design.

Jewel tones on the runway

A yearly fall winner, jewel tones describe the deep, rich colors observed in gemstones. These saturated hues resurface yearly for the vibrancy and energy they bring to an outfit or home. Starring on the runway, it relies on tones such as brilliant gold (Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, and Alberta Ferretti), blue sapphire (Loewe), and red garnet (the gemstone equivalent of the dark cherry red internet trend).

In interior design, along with the typical emerald green and blue topaz, we saw rose-purple amethyst for exciting accents in home décor. Lastly, a color combination is already a favorite in Indian weddings; a range of amethyst tones and metallic gold are trending in wedding décor, which screams luxury, opulence, and elegance. Jewel tones are winning colors for a dramatic project or can be paired with muted tones as a pop of color.

Balletcore blue and pink

Picking up speed at the end of 2023, balletcore danced into 2024 with fashion brand collaborations from companies such as J. Crew and Reformation. Instantly connecting to an audience interested in exploring and wearing ballet fashion, this trend mixed delicate femininity and powerful silhouettes.

Simultaneously celebrating the human figure and subverting the idea that dressing with whimsy means fragility, balletcore fits into the overarching fashion discourse of authenticity. The style honors the hard work and strength that ballet dancers must have to create an elegant, graceful masterpiece. The style’s versatility to fit within other styles or to be the center of attention contributes to its longevity.

Textures in the style range from tulle and satin to chiffon and velvet. Trending colors found in balletcore range from dusty blue and ballet pink to vermillion red and purple plum, creating a feeling of “soft yet dynamic”.

Metal in every form

Dominating, attention-grabbing, futuristic, and iconic, metal became a constant in 2024.  It took to runways, celebrity outfits, home design, jewelry, and makeup, sweeping across industries.

Upcycled, liquid, hammered, brushed, and polished, metal took on many different forms and was represented across themes of sci-fi, luxury, sustainability, and history.

Worn by Zendaya as part of her vintage robot suit, metal helped to create an iconic presence at the world premiere of Dune: Part 2 (March 1, 2024). Cate Blanchett wore a shirt made of spoons to bring attention to sustainability in fashion. Chappell Roan wore an armored suit to channel Joan of Arc. From runways to daily life, metal was a go-to in 2024.

Looking ahead to the trending colors of 2025

Black cherry

Dark cherry red gained traction in 2024 and is set to be a dominating color in 2025. With a twist of tart and moody, this daring continuation may develop into a deeper color with the potential for higher red and black contrast.

Mocha Mousse

As Pantone’s Color of the Year, mocha mousse and other brown tones will act as the new neutral instead of gray, creating a warmer feeling for any product, home design, or fashion collection. Collaborations with many different brands, including IPSY, Pura, and BMW, show how the color can interact with every part of our lives while acting as a neutral base for other hues to pop against.

Deep purple vs. nightshade

Evolving from amethyst and lilac, deep purple will star in home design and fashion as a mood-creating accent or a full monochrome moment.

Minwax, Glidden, and Benjamin Moore all picked a purple shade as their color of the year. Textures paired with the rich hue, such as silk and velvet, are contenders for the 2025 fall runway. Versatile in nature, deep purple can be referred to as nightshade for the medieval trend on the rise.

Pop-punk renaissance—pink and black

Spurred on by the song “APT” by Rosé and Bruno Mars, pink and black will be part of a trending pop-punk renaissance. Used in ways reminiscent of the rock n’ roll poodle skirt, this rose pink and 90% black combination will represent rebellion and truly being yourself.

An array of greens—celadon, olive, and undersea emerald

From jade green celadon to rich, salty olive to undersea emerald, green will have its moment in 2025. As the color with the most range on the visible light spectrum, these hues will find a home as part of many different trends in 2025.
