Rick Owens, fashion's Lord of Darkness

For moody fashion icon Rick Owens, black is the new black. Known as fashion’s “Lord of Darkness,” Owens has spent decades crafting an aesthetic that’s equal parts goth, glam, and architectural genius. From statement silhouettes to bold monochromes, his work defies design trends and makes a case for black as more than just a color—it’s a lifestyle. Ready to bring a little of that edgy elegance into your world? Let’s dive into the Rick Owens aesthetic and discover how to channel his iconic style.

Who is Rick Owens?

Rick Owens has made a profound mark on the fashion and design world. His aesthetic is defined by a unique blend of stark minimalism, bold silhouettes, and an unapologetically dark color palette. Since launching his namesake brand in 2002, Owens has consistently delivered a vision that’s part performance art, part architectural marvel, and all his own.

Known for his androgynous silhouettes, monochromatic tones, and avant-garde approach, Rick Owens is not just a designer—he’s a storyteller, channeling themes of power, rebellion, and raw elegance into every piece. Whether through his brutalist-inspired furniture or his transformative runway shows, Rick Owens embodies an aesthetic that’s as much about attitude as it is about fashion.

How to get the Rick Owens aesthetic

For American-born, Paris-based Rick Owens, collections are an opportunity to explore the intersection between cultural boundaries and fashion. His aesthetic is defined by high-quality fabrics, juxtaposed textures, and a nearly all-black color palette.

Sparrows (2002): The one that started it all

Inspired by the Gothic aesthetic with a romantic twist, Rick Owens shared his take on 90s grunge fashion in Sparrow (2002). This collection includes asymmetrical cuts, skin-tight looks, close-fitting hoods, and layering that dates the collection to the 2000s.

A reflection of the cutting edge of 2000s fashion, the assembly touts luxury combined with casual styles, high-end fabrics, and relaxed color palettes. It also plays with form in the hooded trench coats.

Dustulator (2006): Monster trucks and grungy glamour

Rick Owens moved into starker contrasts between black and white and drastically different textures in his 2006 fashion collection Dustulator. Here, his style edged into graphic shapes and grungy glamour, and he started to play with clothing silhouettes, especially with his puffer jackets. This collection saw the creation of one of his most famous concepts: the Rick Owens shoes called “Dunks”, exaggerated high tops meant to be “monster trucks for feet”.

Creatch (2008): Maximalist simplicity

Rick Owens’ legendary Creatch cargos first appeared in the 2008 Creatch fashion collection. A blend of streetwear and sophistication, the Creatch cargos became an Owens staple with their mishmash of textures and large cargo pockets.

Fine textural details balanced with elegant, carefully designed, and styled garments create a theme of maximalist simplicity. Graphic information, such as the white triangle, can be seen in Rick Owens’s shoes.

Vicious (2014): Step-dancers

Donning movement-forward, brutalist design layers, step dancers replaced models in a rhythmic performance that showcased pragmatic designs without compromising Owens’ essential style in Vicious.

Owens designed a new take on athleisure, emphasizing ease of motion and various body types. This collection primarily uses leather fabrics and draped jerseys.

Sphinx (2015): Geometric form, textural function

Rick Owens’ Sphinx collection is known for its divided reviews: lewd and crude, or a beautiful presentation of body positivity? Full of black coats and carefully constructed tunics, Sphinx would be a tame collection except for the male genitalia that peeks out from various cutouts and shorter coats.

Aside from the nudity surprise, the collection touts an exploration of geometric form through many different fabrics. Think wool peacoats cut into barrel shapes, cable-knit full-body sweaters crisscrossing the body, and soft tunics disrupted by harsh geometric lines.

Cyclops (2016): Human backpacks

Ever-unexpectedly, Owens’ Cyclops collection finds women wearing other women as backpacks in a show of female strength. Greek mythological beings, cyclops, are generally considered angry, evil, and powerful, but in Owens’ collection, the theme is reimagined as striking women uplifting each other within their tribe.

Ancient Grecian gender norms are flipped as the models walk down the runway in strappy sandals and draped dresses, carrying their fellow models held up by overlapping straps. It wouldn’t be Rick Owens’ work without a double contrast: harsh, waxed leather combined with forgiving, elegant silk and street-fashion flight jackets combined with graceful, organic dresses.

Performa (2020): Alien-esque

Embracing punchy, bright colors and highly shaped shoulders, Performa takes on an alienesque feeling. Inspired by Owens’ feelings of alienation from and performance for society, this collection embodies the art of self-expression and balance of authenticity.

Performa encompasses many of Rick Owens’ modern signature looks, including his shield sunglasses, the jumbo Tatlin coat, accentuated shoulders, and ultra-puffer jacket. This collection’s textures and patterns reign supreme, including thin stripes, splatter paint, translucent fabric, and cable knit.

Gethsemane (2021): Desert sci-fi

Desert sci-fi puffers, elongated masks, and leather, skin-tight bodysuits appear in Owens’ Gethsemane. Futuristic layered fabrics, muted tones, and silhouettes that alter the figure are all elements in this collection, which tells stories that visually read like sci-fi creations.

Hollywood (2025): Angels and demons

Hundreds of models were recruited for the Hollywood collection, taking over the spring 2025 show and showing unity and strength in numbers. Owens created a uniform look with the models clad in primarily black or cream organza, although there were many different design variants within it.

Always theatrical, Owens arranged for a bouquet of gymnasts to be carried out during the show.
