Envato was ready for a move so finding a home in Melbourne for predominantly remote Australian employees to connect in was key. And as a B Corp, doing it in the most sustainable way was top priority.
Having said bye to our old King Street office, handing over the keys to aspiring B Corp Stone & Chalk who help tech sector startups and scaleups to grow and commercialise, Envato has moved to 551 Swanston Street. Our new digs are a tram ride away from the big corporate buildings of Melbourne’s CBD, and closer to the city’s main universities, gardens, Melbourne Central shopping complex, the state library, and the iconic Queen Victoria Market. Hello lunchtime boreks with hot jam donut chasers!
Before we moved in, this 1890’s heritage building was occupied by Lonely Planet, and going back further, Carlton Brewery. Some of the old barrels have even been retained and will be used as meeting rooms (minus the beer, of course). Now, we’re excited to be neighbours with fellow tech mates, Slack and the super cool open-plan spaces suit our agile and collaborative style of work to a tee.
The workspace has been shaped with wellbeing and collective work in mind – including couches, break-out spaces and stand-up desks, and of course a few traditional spots for focused work too. The kitchen is stocked with fellow B Corps T2 teas, Sprout coffee, and Emma & Tom’s snacks and drinks – they not only fill us up but also prioritise making a positive environmental and social impact on the world.
Environmentally conscious technology such as sustainable wireless charger pads was carefully selected and repurposed desks, monitors, and accessories now support our office needs. And any e-waste such as disposing of broken TVs, monitors and arms, old keyboards and mice, IT cabling, hard drives, servers, and broken printers is done in collaboration with e-Wastec. Through this partnership, Egans’ environmentally sustainable disposal of redundant office furniture, and donations to local schools, we’re able to avoid toxic substances being sent to landfill.
Though we now have a new home, we’re still very proud of our remote roots and continue to be a global team with both office-based and remote teams, fondly called Envatians.
We’ve also worked hard to ensure that our commitment to creativity and the creative community is never far from view, with each meeting room named after previous Pantone Colour of the Year winners.
In addition to our Melbourne and Guadalajara offices, we have employees and contractors across Los Angeles, New Zealand, and Israel, and many working from anywhere as they travel across different time zones. It’s part of what keeps us adapting to the changing needs of the company, our employees, and our community.
