What is Wacky Pomo?! The 90s ‘wacky kidz’ trend decoded

Maximalism is back in a big way in 2026, with weird and wonderful nostalgia aesthetics resurfacing on social media. Wacky Pomo, or Wacky Postmodern, is a 90s design trend inspired by kids' game shows, animations and children’s packaging design. It’s exaggerated, extreme and super fun, but you’ll need to leave your good taste at the door to really get into it.

What is Wacky Pomo?! The 90s 'wacky kidz' trend decoded

2026 design trends are reflective of a shift towards escapism. Digital nostalgia, early internet aesthetics like Frutiger Aero and retrofuturistic aesthetics like Y3K transport TikTok-swiping Gen Z to a pre-social media era, when Pokemon cards were your raison d’être, sour nerds were your go-to snack and Scooby Doo was your homeboy.

The Wacky Pomo aesthetic is making a surprising comeback across interior design, branding and packaging design, with brands tapping into this weird and wacky design trend to appeal to adults as well as kids.

If you want to build brand designs that appeal to younger demographics as well as tapping into Millennial nostalgia, the Wacky Pomo trend is one to know about.

We’ll cover this maximalist aesthetic as it was and as it can be interpreted by designers now, look at eccentric examples of Wacky Pomo chaos packaging and explore assets that can bring your Wacky Pomo ambitions to crazy life!

What is Wacky Pomo?

Inspired by the experimental aesthetic of postmodernist design and architecture, Wacky Pomo is a playful, zany design aesthetic that emerged across designs aimed at kids in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Wacky Pomo trend can trace its roots to the colorful, geometric Memphis Style, as well as the wacky style of children’s animations and kids’ cartoons.

The best way to describe Wacky Pomo is like a weird cartoon come to physical life.

Checkerboard triangles, irregular cartoon shapes, jaunty fonts and pointless futuristic tubes are just some of the Wacky Pomo traits you’ll see across interior design, packaging designs and kids’ ads from this era. Texture and color are also key to this trend, and we’re not talking minimalist matte beige. Cheap, shiny plastics are the order of the day, teamed with plenty of slime green and hot pink.

Maximalist nostalgia in 2026

Wacky Pomo isn’t the only nostalgic design trend reemerging in 2026. Across the board marketers are tapping into the emotional draw of nostalgia design trends for Gen Z and Millennial audiences.

These pre-digital or early internet aesthetics speak of a much simpler time, before algorithms and AI took over the conversation. Computers were novel and fun, not a threat to your sanity.

2026 branding trends like Wacky Pomo, Anti-Design and Frutiger Aero also mark a reactionary shift away from minimalism and ‘Millennial Blanding’ — ubiquitous, neutral design that suddenly feels really boring. Overstimulated maximalism that veers dangerously away from any standard of good taste is just the tonic (whether you like it or not).

Does this mean all my designs need to look weird now?

In a word…yep. Crowded layouts, color-blocking and WordArt fonts are the markers of this new age of maximalist design, as brands rush to appeal to aesthetically fickle Gen Z.

So put down the minimalist sans serif…

Key elements of the Wacky Pomo aesthetic

Wacky Pomo is weird and experimental, but (surprise!) it still has rules. Combining these core elements will conjure up a delightful Wacky Pomo soup.

Wacky Pomo color palette

If you gave free rein to an eight year old to decorate their own bedroom, this would probably be the resulting color palette. Fuchsia pink, sunshine yellow, cherryade red, and berry purple are key Wacky Pomo colors. If it looks like it contains various E numbers, you’re onto a winner.

And, of course, slime green is non-negotiable.

Plastic textures and hyper patterns

High-shine textures, 3D plastic backgrounds and hyper geometric patterns can be layered behind other Wacky Pomo elements to create a completely overstimulated layout with no white space in sight. Checkerboards, polka dots, warped acid-trip shapes and bright gradient backgrounds look spot on.

Is it too much? Well, yes, but that’s the whole point.

Wacky fonts

Does the phrase ‘novelty font’ strike fear into your very soul? Then look away now. Weird and wacky fonts with jumpy letters and random drop shadows are the backbone of a Wacky Pomo design. Bonus points for layering your WordArt font against a spiral background.

Cartoon characters

Wacky Pomo design originated from kids’ marketing, so cartoons naturally are a big part of the look. Cartoon characters can be integrated into designs, but generally everything needs to look like it’s stepped out of a 90s animation. Think outlandish shapes, otherworldly designs and simplistic, bold patterns.

Kooky laboratory references

The eccentric lab professor with the mad hair is your spirit animal for Wacky Pomo. Wacky Pomo was often used to present educational content to children, so it makes sense that weird and wonderful ‘laboratory chic’ permeates throughout this 90s aesthetic. Brightly colored rockets, winding tubes and space-age interiors play into the experimental feel of this design trend.

Examples of Wacky Pomo aesthetics in design

Wacky Pomo can be divisive, with this most maximalist of TikTok trends splitting opinion (don’t expect committed minimalists to be converted). Nonetheless, Gen Z consumers seem to be increasingly drawn to super colorful, childlike brand design, with the trend emerging across interior design, furniture design, packaging and branding.

Interior and furniture design

You’ll see the Wacky Pomo aesthetic most prominently on social media in interior design, architecture and furniture design. Physical space really allows the sheer wackiness of postmodernism to shine, but it doesn’t mean the results can’t be sophisticated as well. 3D Designer Mona Mashhour created a conceptual kitchen space that merges midcentury colors with Wacky Pomo shapes to create a surprisingly elegant space.

But you’ll find plenty of purist Wacky Pomo tributes, too, from Beauxzium’s full commitment to creating a Wacky Pomo apartment, complete with slime green furniture and tangerine orange carpets, to a Parisian interior that plays with cartoonish structure for furniture and stairways.

Packaging and brand design

You’ll see examples of maximalist branding on chaos packaging and Wacky Pomo-inspired identities for food, beauty and drinks products.

Wacky Pomo packaging designs include Sebastian Curi’s box designs for Youth to the People’s Superfood Cleanser, complete with packed, maximalist layouts and hand-drawn illustrations, and Lume’s tea packaging that includes individually designed tea bag wrappers in a cartoonish retro style.

See also designer Richard Anderson breathing new life into dark chocolate’s serious reputation with cheeky brand design for FATSO. The font choice and vibrant colors borrow from the Wacky Pomo playbook, while vintage textures build in a nostalgic mood.

How can I use Wacky Pomo aesthetics in my own projects?

Wacky Pomo style is really fun to play with, and for designers willing to overlook conventional brand rules, it can be both aesthetically and creatively rewarding. It’s really up to you how far you want to take the trend. A light dose of jaunty geometric shapes can transform an otherwise minimalist design, or go all the way with full-to-bursting maximalist design. Either way, these are the Wacky Pomo design assets to add to your arsenal.

Wacky Pomo fonts

Cartoonish, jumpy and weird, Wacky Pomo fonts bring an instant dose of fun to logos and messaging. Look for chaotically cut-out fonts, bubble fonts or novelty cartoon typefaces. Blow them up big and chunky for maximum impact.

90s video templates

For social media marketing and reels, look to nostalgic video intros and retro logo reveals, with bold geometric patterns and cartoon graphics.

Stickers

To enhance the childlike feel of your designs, apply cute and quirky sticker graphics liberally. Cartoon characters, emojis, nostalgic tech and science-themed designs play into a Wacky Pomo aesthetic.

Crazy patterns

Chaotic graffiti textures, spray art backgrounds or geometric backgrounds can be layered behind your designs to create an even more maximalist effect. Build in plenty of Wacky Pomo colors and patterns, such as checkerboard, zebra stripes or acid gradients.

Wacky Pomo 3D interiors

Wacky Pomo is at its most immersive when applied to physical spaces, but you can bring the experience to online designs without the need for an expensive set. Has Wacky Pomo got marketing legs?

A few years ago, the idea of an outlandish aesthetic like Wacky Pomo being adopted by mainstream branding seemed farfetched at best. But with maximalist branding and nostalgic aesthetics finding fresh fans in Gen Z, could this mark the end of minimalism’s marketing reign?

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Wacky Pomo aesthetics can’t fail to delight even the most stoic of designers. All we’ll say is give it a try! Dip a toe with a weird font, wacky background or cartoon elements for social media designs, branding and website creations. Will you be converted?

Gen Z are a hyper-aesthetic audience to entice, so marketers need to stay ahead of the freshest TikTok trends and online aesthetics. Digital nostalgia trends like Frutiger Aero and Anti-Design are doing the rounds on social media, with 2026 UX design trends also reflecting a shift towards hyper-stimulated maximalist design for digital spaces.
