It\u2019s unnerving. It\u2019s a little bit <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/practical-effects-black-mirror\">Black Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While AI in filmmaking is still in its early days, it&#8217;s already stirring up both creative breakthroughs and ethical debates. Let\u2019s explore how AI is reshaping Hollywood, what it means for the humans behind the camera, and whether creativity and code can truly coexist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the current role of AI in filmmaking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can be a good helping hand for filmmakers. We&#8217;ve already seen it used in a variety of applications, becoming a practical tool for artists in different departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples from recent years include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Critically acclaimed film <strong>The Brutalist<\/strong>, a big name in the <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/oscars-2025\">Oscars 2025<\/a> edition, implemented generative AI for the memorial video seen towards the end of the film. The team also used AI to subtly enhance the characters&#8217; Hungarian accents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The makers of <strong>The Fall Guy<\/strong>, one of 2024\u2019s biggest blockbuster films, used AI to polish up a few scenes. They even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsp.com.au\/our-work\/filmography\/the-fall-guy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">used machine learning<\/a> to change one of Hannah Waddingham\u2019s lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A24 used AI-generated <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/how-streaming-changed-movie-posters\">movie poster designs<\/a> for the online marketing campaign of Alex Garland\u2019s <strong>Civil War<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The team behind <strong>Top Gun: Maverick<\/strong> used AI to recreate Val Kilmer\u2019s voice, as the actor had sadly lost his voice following a throat cancer treatment years before the film was in the works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Scorsese\u2019s <strong>The Irishman<\/strong> used advanced machine learning \u2014 a precursor to some of today\u2019s AI-powered tools \u2014 to <a href=\"https:\/\/photography.tutsplus.com\/articles\/3d-de-aging-exploring-digital-youth-in-film--cms-108983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">de-age actors<\/a>. Such technology has been widely used, <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/star-wars-design\">Star Wars<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Indiana<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Jones<\/strong>\u00a0franchises have also benefited<\/span> from it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - Maverick &amp; Iceman Scene | Movieclips\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fV0ApOOSGBc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of these films weren\u2019t even on the AI skeptics\u2019 radar because their applications were not that noticeable (well, for the most part). That was no secret, though, since Adrien Brody became the latest Best Actor award winner for <strong>The Brutalist<\/strong>, which used AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Brutalist<\/strong> is clear proof that we can think of AI as the chisel instead of the sculptor. That being said, will there ever be a curve in the movie-making capabilities of AI? Will it come to a point where we\u2019re craving less of it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may happen. Just like some of us watch the latest superhero movies and think, <em>\u201cThere were movies with way better CGI a decade ago,\u201d<\/em> this idea will probably haunt AI as well. Yet again, as fun and powerful as AI can be, it\u2019s a tool that must be used wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI and technical aspects of filmmaking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that\u2019s still out of reach for AI (a concern for some, a relief for others) is its poor understanding of many of filmmaking&#8217;s technical aspects. AI copies and learns from what\u2019s been done to imitate. But can it understand the reasoning behind a lighting choice? Maybe one day, but it\u2019s not there yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lighting is a difficult art to master, even for seasoned filmmakers. It conveys a message, highlights what matters, and plays an irreplaceable role in world-building. That is true for other technical aspects, such as the production design, the cinematography, and the score, just to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Affleck\u2019s take on AI is a clever way of understanding why this happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAI is a craftsman at best (\u2026) Craftsmanship is knowing how to work. Art is knowing when to stop (\u2026) Knowing when to stop is going to be a very difficult thing for AI to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"AI doesn\u2019t stand a chance against actors, or Shakespeare: Ben Affleck\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ypURoMU3P3U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Affleck is far from being the only Hollywood figure who has shared their outlook on AI in filmmaking. Let\u2019s dive deeper into this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hollywood\u2019s different stances on AI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main topics behind the 2023 strikes in Hollywood was the concern surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/photography.tutsplus.com\/articles\/the-rise-of-ai-in-film-making-how-ai-is-revolutionizing-the-industry--cms-108729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the rise of AI in the film industry<\/a> and its impact on TV shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just about the fear that AI might replace jobs across every department in a production. These filmmaking-oriented AI companies will likely operate within SAG-AFTRA\u2019s post-strike guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding a balance between AI input and human creativity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Writers, actors, and other stakeholders in the industry are very wary (and with good reason) of <a href=\"https:\/\/photography.tutsplus.com\/articles\/the-ethics-of-ai-in-film-balancing-creativity-with-tech--cms-108730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI ethics in filmmaking<\/a>, as well as its limits and restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common concern is whether creativity and human sensibility will ever be entirely replaced \u2014 or even convincingly imitated \u2014 by AI. There are a variety of points supporting this idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saving budget on equipment and resources.<\/strong> <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">There is no need for super-expensive cameras or fancy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/how-to-edit-video\" target=\"_blank\">video editing software<\/a>, at least not for every&nbsp;<\/span>project. That\u2019s the benefit of being in the early stages of adoption: filmmakers have time to pay attention to the fine print and ensure the terms of the tools they use are good enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, creatives get to decide whether or not to use AI and how to use it.
